Flue gas has its origin from the combustion of coal in power plants. Combustion of fossil fuels for energy production generates by-products as bottom ash and fly ash and flue gas emissions to the atmosphere. The primary gases result from combustion of coal are sulfur oxides and nitrates. Secondary pollutants are heavy metals, boron, etc. Sulfur present in coal is converted for 95% to sulfur dioxide (SO2) when burned. Reduction of emissions from sulfur oxide emitting processes is increasingly being carried out world-wide in the last years, due to stringent legal limits for effluent discharge.
Typical SO2 removal processes are wet scrubbing and dry scrubbing. In wet scrubbing systems, the ones mostly used, the fly ash is removed first by an electrostatic precipitator (ESP), then the flue gas passes into the SO2 absorber. Electrostatic precipitator performance is often enhanced by adding ammonia to the flue gas. The flue gas exiting the absorber is highly corrosive, because it’s saturated with water and still containing SO2. These highly corrosive gasses can damage any downstream equipment. Using corrosive resistance materials or reheating the gasses above dew point minimize corrosion.
In dry injection or spray drying systems, the SO2 reacts first with limestone before removing particulates from the flue gas.
